CNN had an interesting blog rolling today. They were asking people who work 7 days a week how they handle it and how it has impacted their lives. Interestingly enough many people wrote in commenting on their job situation. One young girl wrote about her graduate classes as well as 3 part-time jobs that she is holding down. Her day will oftern begin at 7:00 am and end at 1:00 am. She said she wakes up everyday with an agenda and just sticks to it.
Then on the other end was a man who said he would be happy to work 7 days a week. He is one of the unfortunate ones who has lost his job due to our economy. He is one of those people who holds signs up out on sidewalks, etc. for a little extra cash. This type of work is great for grocery money or gas money but doesn’t stand up well to a full-time job that offers a chair to sit on and benefits. It’s interesting to see 2 sides to the story-one which consists of a woman working 3 jobs to make ends meet and another who is trying to find one full-time job to make ends meet.
If your company is anything like the one I work for then you probably have noticed some changes over the past few months. Starting back in late October started our layoffs. It lasted for about 2 weeks until the final cuts were made. Fortunately for me I fall into the hourly paid employees who were all safe from the layoffs. Most of the cuts came from upper management. Which meant that the managers who are still there are now in charge of managing further departments and more people.
My current boss for example was in charge of the front desk staff and guest services. Now she runs the front desk, conference concierge, the spa, guest services, and the health club. Essentially her job now involves managing 5 times as many people as before. This means she is constantly checking time cards, writing schedules, trying to please everyone with their requests for days off, etc. and this is only one aspect of her job. She mentioned to us the other day how helpful iemployee has been in alleviating some of the hassle of the extra paperwork needed when it comes to entering out PTO time in system This may not seem like a tedious job unless you’re trying to manage it for 50 or 60 people. With iEmployee you save the headaches and the hassle by allowing technology to do the work for you. You punch in the numbers and the rest is done. What could be a better investment? Go to HR Software and check out their website and all they have to offer.
I have absolutely nothing to complain about. I love my job, I love my wife, I basically love my life. For some reason though today I am feeling so overwhelmed. It’s one of those days when you feel like you can’t get everything done. I know the day just started but I work at 3:00 so all of my errands, etc. need to be done before then. The funny thing is I decided to get on the computer instead of getting in the shower. I thought it might help relax me and get my mind off of my never ending to do list. Now that I’m thinking about the errands I have to do I guess it’s time to go. What doesn’t get done today can always wait until tomorrow.
The other day at work we all had some downtime so we started talking about the best things that we had done in our lives. I was the first to mention the job I walked out on in my 20′s for a much better and higher paying position. Then Melinda mentioned that the best thing she had ever done was getting Lasik Surgery. I didn’t even know that she had that done. It was pretty ironic that she mentioned it since I have been thinking about doing it myself. She told me that her vision was so bad before that she had to hold the alarm clock right up to her face in order to see it in the morning. Now she has perfect 20/20 vision.
One doctor that was mentioned during our conversation was Jack Holladay M.D. who works out in Houston. While doing some research on the Internet about Lasik Surgery his name kept popping up. I found him on a website as well called www.ucomparehealthcare.com. If you are thinking about Lasik surgery or have been thinking about it for awhile go to Jack Holladay and take a look for yourself. This nonprofit patient advocacy program may be the thing you have been waiting for.
